What is Joint Custody/Joint Parenting?
Chicago Parenting Attorneys
When children are a part of a divorce proceeding, their emotional well-being should be factored into nearly every decision made by their divorcing parents. Their lives have changed as they face a completely different family dynamic with their parents living in separate households.
The Benefits Of Shared Parenting Agreements
Shared Parenting time and responsibilities helps ease the transition for children. In the past, Illinois, like many other states used the term “custody” to describe the parenting arrangements made between divorcing parents. Recently however Illinois has completely done away with the term “custody” and all parenting arrangements are now referred to as allocation of parenting time and responsibilities. Parenting responsibilities include decisions regarding a child’s education, healthcare, religion and extracurricular activities. Decisions regarding these major areas will not necessarily be granted to one parent or both parents but the court will determine which parent should be responsible for the decisions of each area or if some areas should be shared by both parents. The allocation of parental responsibilities will depend on the facts and circumstances of each case. As always, the Court will look at the best interests of the child in making determinations about which parent should make which decisions.
At Boyle Feinberg Sharma, we share the court’s interest in looking out for the best interests of children. We work diligently to resolve parenting time issues or disputes and expediently arrive at an allocation agreement that both sides agree upon and protects the parenting rights of our clients. However, if an agreement cannot be reached, we will pursue resolution in a courtroom.
